The front brake of my '99 Savage did the same thing, starting somewhere
around 5000k. I was told that there might be an accumulation
of grit and to wash the pads and the disk. I was also told
that scribbling on the disk with a lead pencil might prevent
the pads from vibrating excessively and making lots of noise (which
did work, but not for very long). When I took the bike in for the 6000k
service, the source of the screeching was found--the pads were
completely shot. They had worn through to the metal peices which are
designed to make lots of noise to let you know you need new pads. Once
the pads were replaced, all the noise stopped. Obviously, the
factory pads are not great quality, and maybe yours do need to be
replaced dispite the low milage.

Take care,

Michael
